In 2023, the European Union's railway network reached a total length of 200,947 kilometers, with high-speed rail lines accounting for 8,556 kilometers—a 47.2% increase from 2013.

Eurostat, the official site for the European Union is writing that this expansion underscores the EU's commitment to enhancing rapid transit connectivity across member states.
Leading countries
Spain emerged as the frontrunner, boasting 3,190 kilometers of high-speed rail lines in 2023, up from 1,919 kilometers in 2013—a 66% growth. France followed with 2,762 kilometers, marking a 28% increase from 2,158 kilometers in 2013. Germany also contributed significantly, with its high-speed network expanding from 1,285 kilometers in 2013 to 1,474 kilometers in 2023, representing a 14.7% rise.
Railway network
The density of railway networks varies among EU countries. Czechia recorded the highest density, with 123.2 meters of railway lines per square kilometer. Belgium (119.2 m/km²), Germany (109.5 m/km²), and Luxembourg (104.8 m/km²) also showcased substantial railway densities. Conversely, Greece (14.0 m/km²) and Finland (19.4 m/km²) reported the lowest densities, indicating potential areas for future infrastructure development.
Implications
The continuous expansion of high-speed rail lines reflects the EU's dedication to sustainable and efficient transportation solutions. As the network grows, it is poised to offer faster and more environmentally friendly travel options, strengthening economic ties and promoting regional development across Europe.
