On February 7, 2025, a passenger aboard Iberia flight IB578 from Paris-Orly Airport to Madrid caused a significant disturbance by attacking a flight attendant, opening an emergency exit, and jumping onto the tarmac while the aircraft was taxiing for takeoff. The individual was promptly apprehended by airport security forces. The flight, operated by an Airbus A320neo, was subsequently canceled, and passengers were rebooked on alternative flights.

Not isolated incident

This incident is not isolated; there have been similar occurrences in recent years. In December 2024, an Alaska Airlines passenger opened an emergency exit and climbed onto the wing during deboarding at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport. The individual was detained and taken for a medical evaluation.

In another case, a Jetstar passenger in Australia opened an emergency exit and exited onto the tarmac after the plane landed in Melbourne. The man was arrested by the Australian Federal Police for aggressive behavior and breaching safety protocols.

Three incidents with Iberia in February 2025

In recent years, Iberia Airlines has experienced a few notable incidents:

  • February 21, 2025: During a flight from Düsseldorf to Madrid, a pilot was bitten by a spider, believed to be a tarantula, suspected to have boarded during a layover in Casablanca. The pilot, who is allergic to spider bites, received medical treatment upon landing. The aircraft was subsequently fumigated, causing a three-hour delay before its next flight.

  • February 2025: A passenger on a Paris-Madrid flight physically assaulted a flight attendant and exited the aircraft via an emergency door before takeoff at Paris Orly Airport. The incident led to significant delays and discomfort for other passengers, many of whom had to stay near the airport overnight.

  • February 2025: Passengers on a Rome-Madrid flight experienced an emergency landing in Barcelona due to smoke in the cabin. Iberia provided meal vouchers but couldn't confirm departure times to Madrid. Affected passengers received compensation of over 700 euros. citeturn0news19

Historically, Iberia has had significant accidents, such as the 1985 crash of Flight 610 during approach to Bilbao Airport, resulting in 148 fatalities.
