Runway dangers: Upgrading security to prevent crashes

In the wake of a tragic Jeju Air crash on December 29, 2024, which claimed 179 lives, South Korea has mandated the installation of bird detection cameras across its airports to enhance aviation safety.

This is according to Aljazeera. This directive underscores the critical importance of advanced security systems on runways to mitigate various hazards, including wildlife interference and unauthorized intrusions.


Bird detection and mitigation systems

Bird strikes pose significant risks to aircraft during takeoff and landing. To address this, airports are increasingly adopting sophisticated bird detection technologies. For instance, avian radar systems, like those developed by Robin Radar Systems, can automatically detect and track hundreds of birds simultaneously, providing real-time data on their size, speed, direction, and flight paths. This information enables airports to implement effective wildlife management strategies, such as modifying flight schedules or deploying deterrence measures.


Seattle-Tacoma International Airport pioneered the use of avian radar in 2007, becoming the world's first airport to implement such a system for continuous monitoring of bird activity. This technology has since been instrumental in enhancing situational awareness and reducing bird strike incidents.


Runway surveillance and intrusion detection

Beyond wildlife hazards, maintaining runway security involves monitoring for unauthorized access and potential threats.
