Viking Nerthus sets sail: New eco-friendly river ship joins the fleet

Viking has expanded its European river cruise fleet with the delivery of the Viking Nerthus, a vessel specifically designed for voyages along France's Seine River.

Constructed by Neptun Werft in Rostock-Warnemünde, Germany, this ship according to a press release from the cruise company. represents the latest advancement in Viking's renowned Longship series.

Tailored design for the Seine River
The Viking Nerthus measures 125 meters (410 feet) in length, a deliberate design choice that enables it to navigate the unique conditions of the Seine River and dock in central Paris. The ship accommodates 168 passengers across 86 cabins, offering an intimate and comfortable cruising experience through the heart of France.
Innovative hybrid propulsion system
Incorporating modern environmental considerations, the Viking Nerthus is equipped with a hybrid propulsion system that combines diesel-electric drives with a battery system. This setup effectively absorbs peak loads and enhances fuel efficiency. Additionally, the vessel features advanced wastewater treatment systems and is outfitted with solar panels to further reduce its environmental footprint.
Viking's ongoing fleet expansion
The delivery of the Viking Nerthus marks the beginning of Viking's ambitious plan to introduce 25 new river cruise ships by 2028, bringing their total river fleet to 109 vessels. This expansion includes additional ships for the Seine River and the larger Longship series, each designed to accommodate 190 passengers. These forthcoming vessels will feature similar hybrid propulsion systems and environmental technologies, underscoring Viking's commitment to sustainable cruising.
